vivid colors

Written on February 5, 2010

Obviously dreams are very personal whether they are the kind you dream while sleeping or the kind that keep you living.

So I thank you for taking the time to share your dreams with details about snow, loss, cats, flying, gray skies, gold & ritual, mirrors, vampires, animals of every kind, mountains & history… all of them were interesting.

I’ve always had extremely vivid dreams. I grew up with nightmares night after night throughout my life. They were always very imposing and because of them I made an effort to try and learn how to control my dreams. Sometimes I can, sometimes I can’t… Even when I have terrible dreams I ponder the details at length.

A couple of dream details from myself:

first (a small section from a long dream from over a year ago):

I was curious about a strange portal in the middle of a busy street and walked through the opening by myself.

Inside was an expanse of pale yellow horse hair, swirled like paint where grass should be. I was at the top of a sloping hill.
On the trail where you walked, you could see horse flies burrowed into the hair.

I was afraid that they might still be alive and that they’d bite me so I stepped very gently and noticed that the path was at least a half a mile long.
It felt dangerous and alive.

Beyond the horse hair, I could see another open field which was covered in the greenest grass and a couple of trees.
When I finally reached it, I turned to the right and walked down a narrow little road that seemed to be paved with old german cookies.

second (from a week before christmas):

I was sitting on a shelf in a brightly lit store watching snow fall through a window during a dark morning while I crushed pearls into my hair.

Hi Amy! I love your art. Your talk of dreams and rich imagery made me think of Carl Jung’s secret dream book, which he illustrated himself. I read a long article about it last year in the New York Times — did you see it? I’m betting you did, but just in case, here’s a link. The article is entitled “The Holy Grail of the Unconscious.” http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/20/magazine/20jung-t.html?_r=1
